Ōta Lifeオタライフ

A redesign of the Ōta TOKYO fan app. Three mascots host the app, one currency (Ōra) measures everything, and every reward moves. The phone runs the real app: tap anything, or jump straight into a flow below.

About the redesign

From five counters to one story

What wasn't working

A teardown of 16 screens from the current app found the same problems again and again:

Five unexplained counters: points, XP, tickets, votes and streak

One currency, Ōra. Power sets your rank; Wallet is what you spend

Vote bars stuck at 100% (1,720 of 100)

Ideas climb five stages with real goals, so bars always mean something

Gacha dead end with 0 tickets and no way forward

Pull with Ōra or follow a button to the next ticket quest

Ticket tiers buried in a paragraph of text

Day and tier pickers with perks side by side, then checkout

Leaderboard full of tied 1,000s; quiz had no feedback

Time breaks ties; instant right/wrong with a word note on every answer

Long survey asking T-shirt size before you see the app

Three short mascot chats; size is asked once, at the first merch checkout

Floating bell covering cards; tab names didn't match titles

A mascot inbox in the top bar; one host per tab

Mascots that act like themselves

Each mascot owns a part of the app that matches its backstory, and reacts in character:

TAKU-kun, the Akiba otaku, hosts Discover: reels, the word of the day, communities and the Fan Council, where every Cheer is his wotagei glowstick dance.

Puri-kun, the hardcore gamer, hosts Battle: the Daily Challenge, the weekly league, a "GG" sign for wins and a rage-quit when things go wrong.

Momo-chan, the debut idol, hosts Stage: events, merch and the capsule machine. She is also your streak: lively on a roll, sleepy when it's at risk.

Gamification with a clear goal

Daily quests, one from each mascot, with a chest when all three are done.
Streaks that boost Ōra at 3, 7, 30 and 100 days, with shields that cover a missed day.
Ranks with bosses: Shoshinsha to Kami, each gate guarded by a yokai of otaku woes (Spoiler Kappa, Filler Tanuki…).
A fair capsule machine: odds and pity counters are always visible, and pulls never cost real money.
Weekly league that resets every Monday and pays the top three.

A modern visual rework

Mascots redrawn as flat, Duolingo-style 2D rigs in code, with squash-and-stretch jumps and around 20 moods each.
Two themes: Idol Pastel (default, candy colours and glossy buttons) and Night Stage.
Every reward animates: numbers count up, bars grow, Ōra flies into the wallet.
